Still Over It- Summer Walker

A tumultuous and emotional breakdown of the break-up process

Circus, Unloyal, Ciara’s Prayer and a few notable songs.

3.5/5

I was not sure what to expect when I first heard Summer Walker would be coming out with an album, usually, an artist’s second release album always seems to pale in comparison to the debut one. However, this one would be featuring Ciara and JT from the City Girls, more specifically the infamous Ciara’s Prayer. That was the one that intrigued me most. I was yet to understand why this was so significant to the album.

Context

Before the release of the album, the public became privy to Walker’s relationship with producer London on Da Track back in 2019 after the release of Walker’s debut album Over It when they first started dating. They were one of Hip-hop's most prominent power couples, especially because London had played such a heavy part in the construction of her first piece.

Following this, there were definitely some ups and downs in the relationship with rumours of infidelity on London’s part circling around. The initial split was in 2019 where they split but made up the next day, the next being in 2020, and the final being August 2021.

In November 2020, the pair announced they would be having a baby and March 2021 was when the newborn arrived.

Later in August of 2021, Walker went on a rant about how she felt London failed as a father to her child and the children of his previous relationships. She also complained about the treatment she received from the women he was with as she felt that they were not all collaborating as one to have a sustainable household.

She ended the rant with

Well, I guess I’ll just put it all in an album, collect my millions, and be on my merry way…But at least I can afford to take care of my child

and this is where the album begins.

Review

Bitter

It's always easy to call the Babymum bitter…

This is a great introduction to the album, especially because London helped produce this track. It makes the message clearer and sets the intention out-

why these hoes all in our business?

Summer is tired of having the previous women that London had in his life interfere in her relationship. She calls them hypocritical and golddiggers and makes fun of them by saying

London did you screw this b*tch for real?

She believes they are bitter and are trying to bring her down. Essentially, she just wants to be left alone by the women from London’s previous relationship.

Cardi B features on the track giving her advice on how best to handle the situation.

I think it's a good song and a great setup for the rest of the album. It shows her initial feelings towards London- protective and almost territorial of him and what they have while she is fighting the bitter Babymums away.

Ex for a Reason

The beginning of the breakdown…

It takes two to tango, Although Summer is still fighting to keep the relationship afloat, one thing is for certain, it seems she is the only one fighting. This is clear from the tweet she put out accompanying the release of the song,

Don’t fight over a n*gga that got his attention all over the place….I hope y’all learn from my mistakes

She notes at the beginning of the track

She can never be what I am

But as long as he with me, that's what it's gon' be

However, in the first verse, there is already a lack of trust in her relationship. She brags about being

the type to go through my n*gga's phone

The first sign of a toxic relationship. But she does not seem to see that. She talks about being constantly stressed because of London always being on the phone but instead blames his ex for that.

All in all, I think it's great. I feel having JT really helped push the energy of this track given the City Girl’s reputation. It’s got a catchy beat too.

No Love

This is where Summer starts to share her disappointment with the relationship and talks about just wanting to be carefree without having to think about any responsibilities. Honestly, I just really like the song for what it is. Any song with a SZA feature immediately has my heart.
